The site for this residence is a linear plot of 192 sqyds with a dimension of 24’-0” x 72’-0” in Delhi. We were approached by two brothers to create identical and independent living spaces for their families on this west facing plot. Each is married and has children. Their parents would stay with either of them when and where they pleased. Bye laws in Delhi allow for construction of 4 habitable floors with parking on a stilt. Clients needs led us to maximizing on area and housDUPLeX was conceived, wherein two houses with two floors each were planned. Two staircases act as vertical circulation, a common one providing independence to each house and an internal one which connects within two floors. While segregating , a feeling of togetherness is retained by placing all the staircase together and having visibility between them both vertically and horizontally. These staircases combine with a sky lit cutout which brings light and connections to the centre of the house. The facade takes cue from the ideas of duality and expresses itself as floating surfaces in two planes. The planes are designed to shade the house from the harsh west sun and are clad in wood which exudes a sense of a warm home.
